#Should I take an opportunity to switch to embedded c++

Currently working in a mid sized web development company with C# and react. 41k/yr and in office twice a week.

I got an offer for embedded wireless c++ at a defence contractor. 40k a year plus 3k signing bonus, with a vague promise to go up to 46k within 6-12 months. Would be either hybrid or full time office depending on the project.

Yes it’s probably a bad move financially but I would say a lot of the stuff going on in the embedded field interests me more than web dev. Id love to end up working at a space agency or similar and this feels like a step in that direction. But I still enjoy web dev and my current job is chill.

Been going back and forth for the past week over it. Does anyone have any advice?

Also, if I did want to take the embedded job — I think I am in a good negotiating position as they seem quite keen on me. They’ve indicated that they can’t go any higher on salary due to bands (will ask anyway) but what would be some other things to negotiate?

If that's the direction you want to go with your career, then it seems like a good choice to me

The stuff you can do with embedded sounds interesting but I don’t know if I’d like it day to day. I liked playing around with memory for some of my uni assignments but I think embedded is quite different to everything else

Any ideas how I can find out?

Honestly, the main way is by trying it in a job; then if you don't like it, you have other doors

#

You can do some hobby projects, but those are limited in how accurately they show you the work

#

You can also talk to a few people who are in the space and see what they say about the job

Yeah I guess, concerned if it doesn’t work out though my resume will look awful

Only been in the web dev job since July

It's not uncommon for mid-level devs to be finding their footing

Yeah I guess so. I do think this is the way I want my career to go and maybe I just need to take the leap of faith rather than sticking with the comfortable but a bit less desirable position at my existing company
