Dam, guess you’ll just have to work at McDonald’s the rest of your life now sarcasm
Define “need”
I would say there are few qualifications you 100% need for a job
I would advise being less dramatic
Varies wildly
Nothing will make your interviews easier
Except maybe nepotism
But yeah I would advise being less dramatic @dapper dagger
The kind of person who genuinely think one small situation will be the end of the world/career is not the kind of person you want to be
Yep I mean
I did go to college and have worked at cool places
I have had too many people act that way and it’s just so odd
I never really understood where that attitude comes from but yeah I’d chill out
There are people at pretty reputable quant firms who didn’t go to top tier schools
And i know a few who made it after a few years in the industry at big-n
And you definitely don’t need to be at a top school to get into big-n
(Source: me)
@dapper dagger to actually answer your question, it does make it a bit more difficult not going to a target school, but you can still do it. I know a few people at boutique firms that didn't go top tier, but UCI is still a bit low. you'll also probably have to squeeze your way in either by going through more lenient dev shops like big-n or have a large amount of experience in a desirable engineering skillset, like low-level systems engineering or distributed compute
also, your math background is going to be more important, so you should probably hang around the math department more than the CS department-- will probably do more for you professionally in the future anyway
If it’s super important to you to have a top name school Georgia techs online masters has a high acceptance rate, but you do see some experience first and referrals. By that point probably not worth it
I think it's definitely more important for you to be like exceptionally good at stats/math/IQ quiz-type stuff
imo it's less that bad school = no hope but more like good school + good at school + internship at big n + exceptionally good at what they want = high chance you get it
It’s over. You took one step and something didn’t go your way so you should immediately give up /s
Tbh it’s more of what you do with the opportunities you are given.
If you can hack it you'll be able to make a profitable algorithm on your own anyways. Tons of people will hire that
.
@dapper dagger for future reference do not randomly delete old threads
Completely ruins the spirit of the server which aims to help people
my bad it was kinda cringe fr
say what you mean and stand by it tbh
