#Should I switch or stick around for a while in my current job?

I'm working as a 3D Graphics Engineer at an MNC. My job is to work on their new custom game engine for their AR/VR tech.

I joined this company in January 2022, and I was basically a college hire.

I'm conflicted if I should consider switching once I complete 1 year here.

My reason for considering switching

  • Low pay, it's livable considering the cost of living in my country, but it is lower compared to my peers.
  • current company has a bureaucratic environment, although the team I'm in is pretty good, and our manager shields us from most crap, but the higher ups...., they have wild ideas, so we're dealing with frequent deadlines and mismanagement.

My reason for considering staying for some time.

  • I'm working in a somewhat niche field (Computer Graphics), and I'm hoping I may be able to negotiate higher CTC in future if I gain expertise in this, something I've seen precedence for.
  • Other companies working in the same field (Nvidia, AMD etc. or Game companies like Ubisoft) generally do not hire at my experience level, and they prefer someone with research background, something I can develop in my current company as they are very active in research

I'd say there are 4 KPIs you should think about this decision with.

#
  • Learn. How much are you learning.
#
  • Earning. Ditto.
#
  • Reputation. Are you building a reputation as a graphics engineer working at your place? Related, are you "working with the best people."
#
  • Location & Family. Is where you live where you want to live in 5 years.
#

My advice:

#

Opportunity Cost

#

Identify alternative options to where you currently are.

#

Write them down in this channel. Compare.

#

Write down 10 alternative places to work you'd consider aiming for, and how close/far you are from them.

#

Ultimately, you have a good grasp of the situation.
