I am in FAANG and they assigned me a mentor. The problem is that I don't really know what I am supposed to be talking about or how to make sure of the opportunity the best.

I read that you could ask for career advice but honestly am I not sure where to start.

This was when I was an intern.

I talked with my mentor about the onboarding process, whether I was confident to start working on my project and if I needed any help with resources.

Then midway, we transitioned to talking about topics you wouldnt necessarily talk about with your manager. General explanation on how things happen, promotions, how long it takes, how to bring up hard conversations(like return offer) with your manager, how to ask for advice and feedback.

During my final weeks, we just talked about general advice like applying to other companies, negotiating, giving others feedback and stuff like that.

This was not a mentor on my team but a mentor who was Director/engineering manager. My dedicated mentor that was on the same team as me, we only talked about work, help with debugging or explanations for like the code base and stuff like that. Hope this helps : )

For me, it seems like my manager is a good manager so I just asked him about layouts directly and he didn't dodge the question.
