I would start by discussing all these points with them. Especially if they're hiring you as a manager - having two sides with conflicting desires and bringing them together to something that satisfies both is core managerial work.

Ah, as we were just mentioning in #tech-chat recently, "senior" often/usually means mid-level or even junior. It's weird they want that many references then.

I worked at an office handling top secret work and my former colleagues outright refused to give me a reference, supposedly it was against company policy. If you can't get a reference, you can't get a reference, and it's ridiculous to dig back 5 years ago. Tell the recruiter the situation.
