#Getting counter offer from current employer

I got an offer from Amazon, 180 CAD. Currently I make 120 CAD and my employer for sure cannot match 180, but they might be able to give me a promotion and a raise.

I like my current employer, I have 4 weeks vacation + 1 day off a month + I can "buy" another week with my base salary without losing bonus, RRSP match etc. So it'a like 7 weeks vs 3 at Amazon. Plus I am confident that I will get promoted to a manager position fairly quickly, and then it would be possible for me to climb high because the company is from Quebec, I could stay in Montreal and climb as much as I can/want. And I am already starting to manage the team and deciede how we are going to work on projects (my manager doesnt do anything so someone has to do it).

VS Amazon, I would be remote, I would bet that any higher up has to be close to an office, I would have on call every 2 months, probably bad WLB, and I would be far from managing a team when I start, I would be working with tools that I have never used, in Java which I've work with before, but very little.

So I want to ask for a raise or promotion at work, but I have only been there 8 months. On the other hand, I have already started talking about a promotion for January (I'll have been there a year) with my boss and my skip and they both said it should be possible (could be bullshit).

Has anyone gotten a counter offer from their job and stayed? How did it go?

Just one small thing is that I've heard is that once accept an counter offer you are seen as a flight risk. I think there is some statistic that shows a very small percent are still working at same job a year later accept a counter-offer, though I do not have reference article for this currently.

Yeah that is what I am afraid of :/

Yeah, I don't see any real upside of staying. And as a flight risk its probably unlikely they'll consider you for major promotions despite what they say.

#

remote is an upside for most people. learning new tech stack also helps your career greatly. also, if your current company is not a prestigious one, amazon helps with that immensely

#

I think shouldn't auto assume that WLB will be bad at Amazon either. Since it has thousands of teams and roles.

#

and there are many times ive felt confident / told that a promo is coming, for it to never materialize haha (or be way more delayed than the timeline i expected), or if the promo does come its only a paltry payrise of 10k, so im very skeptical about this. climbing at a company or getting any meaningful payraise is never a given.

“probably bad WLB” dont assume this

amazon has thousands… of teams

the vast majority of people @ zon are not under the horrible conditions you hear about on BLIND and REDDIT

It talked with my skip manager (boss is on vacation) and he offered me 25k raise in base (100 to 125) with a promotion effective next week (when my boss comes back)

My current company is def not prestigious but I like it, I like going to the office and seeing people, it helps my mental health. I know Amazon WLB is not always that bad, but I am also tired of switching jobs all the time. It's hard to always learn how things work until you understand enough to have an impact!

Thanks everyone for your advice!
