#Is it acceptable to ask my manager if they want to hire me|have the capability to do so?

I have been interning at this company for 15 weeks now and I have 7 weeks left.

I have had my mid internship review with my manager and they gave me great feedback as well as some things to improve. Overall, they are happy with my performance, work attitude and soft skills like communication etc.

Recently, I overheard two other managers talking in the office about how they had really really good interns last year but they couldn't hire them because they didn't have any headcount space/budgetary issues etc. In addition that company has been hit by the whole economic situation etc.

I have since been at edge - I have put my entire time recently into my projects and have gone far beyond what is required of me to push for that return offer and it all might be for nothing.

Would it be acceptable for me to ask my team manager in my 1on1s if they have the budget/headcount to hire me assuming I perform well? They will need to give me a decision soon anyway. What is the best way of approaching this?

Thank you

if the decision is going to be made soon anyway, what benefit do you see to starting the conversation early?

so you want to mentally check out early?

sure, why should i invest in them if they wont for me?

because you agreed to a term of work, and getting a permanent offer was never guaranteed

you can try to bring it up early with your manager, but the most likely outcome is that they tell you the decision is coming shortly

#

if it's a matter of budget/headcount, then the manager likely has very little influence over the outcome anyway

#

you can check out and do leetcode if you prefer, but successful projects and good referrals are worth way, way more than 3% better leetcode skills, imo

since my time here I have discovered faults and certain procedures and then went on to recommend further projects that I have personally lead and executed. I have overhauled their software standard and conventions for non text based rgoramming and versioning tools etc etc.

I have literally done the job of 2 full time employees and I fucking loved my time so far. Given that, if they are going to get back to me and tell me there aint space for me then I would rather just go back to being a normal intern and focus my efforts on myself

I have already fulfilled and 'more' my 'terms of work' that where set out to me when i started.

sounds like you know everything you need to come to a decision then 🤷

if it would be decided "shortly" in the remaining 7 week term, i think it'd be pretty obvious what your motivations are, and risks doing damage to the relationship you have with your manager

you know the relationship better than i do 🤷 there are certainly some who would take it negatively

Ask it in the next 1on1, no harm in doing that.

Also I'm with you here, if they wont give you an offer, just leetcode.
