Let's assume the Steamer's electrical system is very old and does not have good connections to the headlights causing them to flicker and go out for some time. This would be possible if the headlights are set to the "weak" setting. This phenomena would occur with certainty when you start the dynamo if the lights are switched on beforehand already and random times during the drive.
