Playtest Document 2 is out!

The next version of under the black flag is out now, including three new subclasses for the Null, the Troubadour, and the VESSEL!! A new monster band, the Merrow, of demon sharks, and the Sea Hag solo monster. Some updates to the ship rules have been implemented, based on the first playtest, but they are not final and im looking at all manner of ways to make it as clean as possible.

Will this have its own setting?

currently no, aiming for it to be setting agnostic but i am planning on making a fleet of enemy ships based on the War Dogs

Sounds great, you then give the fleet a home base and go from there 😜

Holy crap Jenny! This is looking sooooo good! I can't wait till this is finished!!

I wonder if you should save the Scion subclass you're going to make until you do the timescape version of this. Then again, maybe not. Pirate version could be cool too.

A buddy and I have talked for years now about how best to implement naval combat into D&D5e. My way was referencing Of Ships and Sea Unearthed Arcana which assumes very close ships traveling slightly faster than a creature can swim. His version includes his own custom rules for long (long) range “ship mode” and then moving to “adventurer mode” when appropriate. I found that playing in “ship mode” removed my ability to use my character’s water magic spells how I wanted, so we have struggled with bringing the ship focus and the PC focus to parity. Reading through Under the Black Flag feels like you have listened to the two of us and said “stand back, let me show you how a real designer handles this.” The balance of interesting ship combat and rules, plus integrated hero powers & rules for moving to “hero mode” just make sense for the narrative and look so fun. Now if only someone else can direct in my group so I can be a player with these rules!
