It sounds like the attack was targeted at specific people, so not everyone necessarily actually got a bad update

This could've been a lot worse

Then again if it wasn't targetted it probably wouldn't have taken months for anyone to notice

No. This report indicates it was highly targetted. If it was a blanket attack on all users it would almost certainly have been caught much sooner and anti-malware programs would have caught on.
