Can you add some color as to what the trigger would be for the supposed template sensor? For example, does the trigger contain the IF/ELSE logic to evaluate if 0 people are in the zone to ignore or override updates to the template sensor?

The trigger will be a state trigger using the zone

You can then use the state going to 0 and use the person attribute in the from_state to determine who was the last person there

I built this for myself now, for zone.home

It should show the last arrival, last departure (both including a timestamp) and should even build a history of max 10 items
