Well, I've tried, and apparently when the source value is not available it does update the value of the template sensor to "unavailable", which gives me the same result from the point of view of the automation. Oh well

maybe I've set up something weirdly, I dont know 🙂

I suppose that makes sense. I thought that it would tell it not to register a state change, but maybe not
