Depending on target_temperature_step it could be frustrating to set a new temperature. If one wants to increase by 1,5ยฐ and has 0,1 step it would take 15 clicks (and 15 service calls - unless it's throttled somehow).
If a temperature_step of 0,1 would just be overridden by, say 0,5 it would feel strange when the current setpoint is 74,2 - clicks would increase to 74,7 -> 75,2 -> 75,7
Sliders eliminate both these problems.
(It may make more sense in Celsius ๐ ๐)
On a day to day usage with ยฐF the ยฑ is good. I do have a single setpoint thermostat that can heat and cool and the seasonal change would be slightly more taps, but still not too bad. Typically cool to 74 in the summer and heat to 66 in the winter.
Here my proposal based on @honest trail . Any wordings like cooling or heating should not be written, I do not like this at the moment as I do not have cooling., therefore it's obvious that heating is active.
Furthermore I like having the "set number" between plus and minus. This is intuitive. And, please make the card as compact as possible ๐
Why are the modes more prominent than the presets?
I guess in most locations heating/cooling is changed twice a year vs. Comfort/Night/Away or what have you is probably changed more often.
That seems like a good question which would need a survey. Personally I've never used presets and as you said heat/cool mode change is seldom. I do use the fan mode most frequently between auto/low/circulate.
