Yeah it could probably be more detailed (might need supervisor changes though)

It's also pretty hidden in general, I make this task/opp to look at adding some of this into the more info dialog also: https://github.com/home-assistant/frontend/issues/30347

No I am now trying to figure out why google drive fails, so I just made a backup to a single instance and I can't see shit 😂

Google doesn’t have progress tracking afaik

So it won’t show anything

It only shows the progress if you get at least one progress event

Regarding your initial questions: It are the separate states the backup reports, the first 3 are part of „preparing backup“ maybe we can make that clearer somehow
