#"Ghost Border Routers" in Matter over Thread

Hi together, I use a SMLIGHT as a OTBR. After each Firmware update I got an additional Ghost Border Router in the Mesh. How can I remove the ghosts, since new devices also try to connect to them and become OFFLINE. Any Ideas ? I do not want to delete the network and pair all devices again.

Only "E887E1A6" is valid as Border Router. This is also the only on which is visable in Home Assistant under Settings -> Thread

"external router" doesn't mean "thread border router" - it just means "device which is on the thread network, is doing routing within the thread network, and which does not expose thread network diagnostics over matter."

#

in all likelyhood it probably is a matter device, just not one that exposes network diagnostics.

#

That said, it still is possible that it is another thread border router - if it is, then the issue is probably that there is something in your home network that is blocking its communication with home assistant. Multiple thread border routers should work fine.

Thank you for your reply. But I tracked it. They were the Tread Border Routers in the past and when I update the SMLIGHT device or even change the APP (Add-ons: OTBR) from Beta to Stable a new "External Router" is created. But since they are like ghosts, device which pretend to connect to it are then OFFLINE, see picture. That is the reason why I want to delete them somehow and tidy up the network. I hope that someone could help me with this topic

very strange... this should be self-healing, devices which had the "ghost" device as a parent should automatically attempt to rejoin the network via a difference device once they realize that the device is not responding.

strange, perhaps I should keep the things with the External Router and try to pair the 2 red devices new (factory reset, pair wih Matter)

#

But they were paired successfully before and worked before

What I suspect is going on is that the device Tmmerflotte, is not resetting its connection and continues to report the old external device name/IP as valid so they show up in the map. Have you tried unplugging (or removing batteries from) all the devices connected to the Ghost for a couple minutes then power them back on and see if the Ghost disappear?

I will try

and if that doesn't work, with 10 or so devices, consider powering down everything for a few minutes then restarting SMlight and let it rebuild the entire thread network from scratch.

Thank you for the hint. Timmerflotte worked now. After removing and inserting the battery, it connects to the real network. Btw still the 3 External router exists.

You may have to remove and reinsert the battery on all the devices the ghost external routers show a dashed line connection to, so those devices clear their network route caches and no longer erroneously report the old device as still present.

Or try not to look at the graph and just use the working devices. 🙂

ok, thank you, I will try

After removing batteries of some devices, one "ghost" router is now gone
