#PoE Cameras and Doorbells, Server and NVR

I've got a hefty POE switch and want to get some test hardware to spin up an NVR system. My current thinking is Reolink and Frigate on some sort of Intel desktop. This is for a home so I don't need anything overly complex or special.

Is Frigate a good option? Reolink? Mostly interested in pitfalls and alternatives. Looking to get doorbells and cams that integrate cleanly for the end user. Will probably end up running this on a PC I build around some DDR4 I have laying around.

# ripe helm any strong feelings on cams, hardware, and/or settings to seek/avoid? Probably g...

In the Reolink integration documentation there is a section on "tested models" which might give you some good info.
I currently have a "E1 Pro Outdoor" and 3 x "Lumus". I would not actually recommend the E1 series anymore as its a bit dated and there are some issues with its RTSP stuff because reolink tried to do some clever stuff with audio codecs at the time and kind of made a mess with it. The Lumus cameras I got are great but they are not PoE. So in general I probably recommend getting a newer range instead of older ones and also check against the tested model list. also just have a google around and see if aa bunch of people are complaining or not. 😛

As for the server it runs on, I am currently running frigate as a truenas app on my NAS system. it has access to the intel GPU (older version) and also has a usb google coral TPU for object detection. although the coral is not actually a recommended option now but it does what I need it to do.

The TPU stuff is interesting. Is Coral still a good way to go? I need to read into that a bit more.

I guess my instinct was OpenVino on an igpu or maybe arc gpu

I am considering adding a Hailo board at some point. but its a bit awkward with my setup.

Reolink RLC-820A works perfect too, including PoE

FWIW I find the human and animal detection inside the doorbells and at least the PTV I have totally acceptable. Combined with SFTP back to my box that runs HA in docker and I have a workable system without the overhead of pulling the streams down constantly. And more important to me: it’s nice and simple. I still use the reolink integration but it’s for the video stream in the dashboard and notifications etc.

E1 Outdoor SE PoE is the PTV. I’d avoid the battery stuff.

Frigate seems ok for me running on an N100 with a Coral USB. I like Axis cameras for critical things, and Amcrest cameras for the cheap end. I tried a super cheap Reolink, and it was garbage; video cuts out/gets scrambled for a few seconds regularly (hardwired, not wifi).
Note the frigate, frigate home assistant integration, advanced camera card integration upgrade can be... nontrivial at times.
