Perhaps this top bit could be extended with a line saying something like "Your last successful manual back-up is from <date>"?

Imo I would put both in the same visual hierarchy because in the end a backup is a backup whether it's manual or automatic. I don't think it should be a sub-message to the "general" error

I was thinking more along the lines of: your automatic back-up failed, but you still have a semi-recent (or not) manual back-up to fall back to. I did not intend my suggestion to be the primary way of communicating manual back-up status
