#Raspberry Pi 4 or HA green

This is a simple question. I'm using Home Assistant on Docker on my NAS, but I want to have full control because I know (from the website, if I remember correctly) that a dedicated operating system is better than a Docker, and it offers more features.

I have an old Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB. Should I buy a HA green, which is plug-and-play, or should I install it myself? I have no problems doing it myself.

Does the Raspberry Pi perform better than the HA green? Right now, I'm controlling some plugs, but I plan to control cameras, lights, plugs, and more in the future, when I move to my own house.
Is it good to run HA on Pi (if Pi is enough) on SD card? I've read that the SD card is bad.

Thanks!

Proxmox optional..

for proxmox and for home assistant (HAOS) you'd have to wipe disk. If installing proxmox, you can then install haos as a virtual machine, even run other things that now run on that pc.

#

those specs you mentioned would be perfect for virtualizing with proxmox

And what is the difference? I mean, installing proxmox and HAOS on vm I get the same as if I wipe right? I know OS has apps (that's why I want to install it)

haos is installed directly as OS on the Dell. haos doent need that amount of ram, it runs fine with 8gb. so the rest would be a loss, unless you install proxmox as OS, then virtualize other stuff like haos, samba server, esphome etc. That way you can get more out of the dell's hardware.

#

and all of it is free to use.

Okay so Proxmox or HAOS is still a wipe. Bummer I hoped I could do it now but I have to do it this weekend!
"Proxmox Virtual Environment" right?

yep

btw, before starting, make a backup in current home assistant, download backup to pc and copy your encryption key (if used) before you start installing. You can upload the backup during installation / onboarding haos after proxmox installation finished.

I run the docker install method in my debian VM. I don't feel the same way about HAOS being "better".

NAS and OptiPlex are 2 different devices. I'm creating daily backups so I can transfer them whenever I want. I'll look into it this weekend
If I understand correctly, scripts are just for installing some programs like Pi-Hole and stuff

What scripts are you referring to?

What sensors do you need? I don't recommend those scripts.

Now I'm confused on what to do

If you're running Bazzite, just install Virtual Machine Manager. No wiping necessary

can it passthrough devices like usb etc?

if not, pain in the *ss when connecting dongles. Personally i would suggest proxmox os, then install vm's or containers, whatever you like. Impact has a point of not using the haos install script, i did not had an issue with it.

If you have to start from zero, a mini pc is totally recommended, but if you have a RPi4, you can start with that. I have the 4GB model with a 256GB SSD, around 150 devices and works perfect. About the cameras, I use some cheap Tapo cameras, and also works ok. I don't know if you are talking about Frigate, that's not for a RPi. And if you make backups, you always can migrate to a more powerful system, like a mini PC

I am running HA on a Pi5 without any issues. ( I am only running a handful of items in my office) Not sure how scalable it will be, but this was a cheap way to get started.
