Hey everyone! 👋
I’ve been working on an idea for a Home Assistant companion device ecosystem called Drubroll and I wanted to share it to see what the community thinks.
What Drubroll is:
Drubroll would be a set of smart home devices designed specifically for Home Assistant dashboards, voice control, and room automation.
Main idea:
Devices run a lightweight Drubroll OS and connect to a Home Assistant server over the network.
Planned devices:
Drubroll Hub
• Zigbee radio
• Thread + Matter border router
• Connects to HA over the network
• Zigbee handled using Zigbee2MQTT → MQTT → Home Assistant
Drubroll Panel
• Wall-mounted touchscreen display
• Home Assistant dashboard interface
• Built-in microphone + speakers
• Voice assistant using OpenWakeWord + Home Assistant Assist
• Can show cameras, lights, climate, etc.
Drubroll Mini
• Small voice satellite for rooms
• Microphone + speaker
• Uses Home Assistant Satellite
• Works like a room voice assistant
Voice features
• Wake words using OpenWakeWord
• Example: “Hey Jarvis” or “Hey Nabu”
• Commands processed through the Home Assistant Assist pipeline
Goal
Create a fully local, open smart-home panel + voice system designed specifically for Home Assistant instead of cloud assistants.
I’m still planning the architecture and would love feedback from the community — especially about:
• hardware design
• Zigbee / Thread coexistence
• best way to pair devices with Home Assistant
• UI ideas for dashboards
If people are interested I might start an open-source prototype.
Would love to hear thoughts! 🥁
