I was thinking about setting up a smart assistant, and connecting some sort of infrared transmitter so it can control tvs and having like remote sets, on alexa you have to connect your roku account and its very limited to what you can do, any thoughts? (I homelab btw)

as already said ESPHome is starting to get great support for IR and its going to be a bit thing soon. Frenck was showing his IR Mate from Seeed the other day. so that might be something to get and be ready to make use off as stuff hits.

A smart IR remote from Seeed Studio, designed to integrate traditional appliances like TVs and air conditioners into your Home Assistant smart home ecosystem.

Is it separate from smart assistant or do you implement it along side home assistant

ESPHome is an opensource firmware that runs on IoT devices and such. It (like Home Assistant) is owned by the Open Home Foundation. It integrates very nicely with home assistant.
The ESPHome "ready made project" is already available HERE, so you can flash it to one of the IR mates. however the home assistant side is not fully complete yet but is coming soon. there will likely be a whole bunch of IR related integrations coming soon along with it.

If your not desperate for everything to be working "right now" then its the way I would go. Then you can be on the cutting edge as stuff arrives in HA.
