#Thread devices unavailable in HA but stable in HomeKit

Hello. i need help regarding Thread/matter in Home Assistant. I've only just started with HAOS after using HomeKit for years and having a very solid Matter over Thread network there. I sadly noticed devices becoming unavailable in HA but remaining absolutely stable in HomeKit. I did come across this https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/123835#issuecomment-2606987788 seeing that it is apparantly a Thread issue and nothing that is wrong on HA side. Apparantly Apple themsleves had to find a workaround for thread to work stable. The comment here https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/134231#issuecomment-2604219962 goes into more depth and explains why it works on Apple but doesn't on HA. They also spoke of trying the same Apple did and see to make it more reliable that way in HA. Does anyone know who, how and where I can get any info on that? What has become of that? Is Thread not a big thing on HA to pursue finding a fix for it? For me as a Matter over Thread only user, having Thread run properly on HA is crucial for my automations to work.

Are you using an OTBR in HA or Apple home TBR only?

#

Have you tried the beta Mattterjs Server instead of the EOL Python matter server?

only atv and homepod minis

#

i don't have any antennas to make a otbr

Ok, often more of an issue to use the HA OTBR especially the older stable release with a functional Apple Home thread network.

HAOS is installed on a Beelini Eq14 with proxmox

i'm sorry this is my first time here so if there are specific sheets of data that one usually sends with a request like this let me know.

You can easily switch to the Beta Matter sever, from the 8.2.2 Matter server app config page. Suggest you try it. Much more stable and robust for Matter over thread than the EOL Python server already. Can also easily switch back to Python there too. First restart takes a while to import the old database, but after that restarts to online are much faster with thread devices.

when is the expected official release of that?

Did you also read through the comments from the github feed? Is marcelveldt known here? Is this the discord he was speaking of?

Yes

So do you also know about what he was talking about there and how this went forward? Is the new Matter server targeting thread issues?

Those GitHub issues were from before they decided to abandon the Python matter server and hire the Matter.JS dev to take over and build the new Matter server.

Also I can probably wait for the official release now to be honest since the heating period is over and those where the only areas where I saw a use in HA over HomeKit (having my automation know when a window is open and not just having the trigger "opening" or having thermostates turn off onyl when the window has been open for 2 minutes to not waste battery turning the heater off just cause I through a leave out of my window for 10 seconds)

Absolutely the new matter server has put a lot of work into refining matter over thread issues already. Like I mentioned much better, more stable and faster than EOL current “stable” already.

Is there a way to passively read how the developement is going on and hear about milestones/potential release dates?

my man! Thank you so much. eh i'll play around with the beta matter server and if I run into issues i might es well set up HA completely new cause there's nothing to loose for me with me fetus old HA :)

#

just started the beta thingy. will it come back online by iself when it's ready or will i need to retsart HA as a whole?

it's been half an hour. Should it be ready now? This is what my device says

From here I would ask the broader audience at https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1461119138713047274. Some may already have the same device (eve thermo?) and or request logs to help you get online with the device or tell you that some entities actually did change when updating for the relatively old Matter 1.3 or so spec of the python matter server to the newer Matter 1.4.2 spec of the Matterjs.server.

#

Yes should be ready by 30 minutes with a small setup. I have 92 matter nodes with the Matterjs.server and they came online in less than 30 minutes for the first restart of the server. Not neccessary to restart HA. From then on its been about 5 minutes to all 92 online and functional in HA.

#

What do you see under the Matter Server dashboard view?

I'm not sure where i can find that. Also sometimes when i go on the matter server i can click "start" suggesting it's not running? It then seems to run since i have the options of...nevermind it says start again suggesting it's not running again. I'll restart my whole home assistant quickly

#

nope apparantly still stops running after a while. did maybe something go wrong when updating to the beta?

Sound like it’s not starting. Suggest to change to debug log level, under matter server app config panel. Restart the matter server then when the restart fails download that log and post it to the new matter server discord channel. Asking for help and briefly stating the server fails to start. Seems your issues may be more network related.

Where will i find the log?

ahhh under "log"
