I’m looking into setting up a security camera system with Home Assistant and would really appreciate some guidance.

My goal is to record and store camera footage in a separate location rather than only locally. I’m trying to understand the best and most reliable way to do this within Home Assistant.

The cameras I’m currently considering are:
• Aqara G5 Pro Camera Hub (WiFi)
• Aqara Camera G100 Select

For the outdoor camera, I need something that can reliably operate in temperatures down to –30°C.

I have a few questions:
1. What’s the best way to record and automatically back up footage externally when using Home Assistant?
2. Do these Aqara cameras work well for this setup, or are there better alternatives (especially for very cold climates)?
Any suggestions, experiences, or camera recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

For software you probably want to use a dedicated NVR software setup. Frigate can take a bit of work to set up but works well and can be integrated into Home Assistant well.

For hardware I generally recommend hardwired Reolink cameras, The home assistant documentation for them has a Tested Models List for stuff that is known working with HA and these will also generally work well with Frigate but you may want to check.
However -30C is very cold. Most consumer grade hardware is probably going to have a operating temperature down to -10C, Maybe they will work lower but it would be a gamble.
You might have to get some kind of more robust hardware designed to work down to -30. If you can find something that can output on standard camera protocols you should be able to implement them into something like Frigate.
