#Which server do I install HAOS on (specs below)?

Hi, I plan on getting into home assistant. I have a TrueNAS server and am building PVE.

In general, is homeassistant better ran on TrueNAS or PVE?

My truenas server is going to soon have 64Gb of RAM, and my PVE when built will have 32Gb but a better processor (6 cores vs 4 cores for TN) ... not sure where I should set up HAOS.

I know PVE handles VMs much better than TrueNAS, and TrueNAS has been still sorting out LXCs/Virtualization. However, my TrueNAS has more RAM and I know that HAOS can require 8+ Gb in advanced set ups.

What's you guys' suggestion? Up until now I have been running tons of dockerized apps on TrueNAS with great success, however I want to get into virtualization and PVE is just better in that regard.

If you mean proxmox with pve, go with pve 😉 HW specs are lovely

What's HW? Sorry lol

I am leaning towards PVE, I think it's the right choice

Right

Just the RAM is kinda annoying since I think I'll be virtualizing a ton of stuff and 8 + Gb is a quarter of what I have

#

how many cores do I dedicate to HAOS? 2 cores?

6 is plenty

#

yeah 2 cores

ok cool

#

I'm just a beginner tbh, I can always allocate more

#

ok thanks

np, good luck

You could merge the two servers, you know?

it's more a hardware thing ... my microatx mobo was full so im building a new pve server with miniatx

Why not proper ATX?

too big for my purposes

#

plus no room

#

I started off running a NAS for SMB, then discovered apps, then started hosting immich, then said screw it and said I want proxmox, but at that point it just made more sense to build a new server since I had extra parts lying around, and I plan on upgrading that as needed with RAM and drives

#

and since im getting PVE, im like why not start HA

#

I sound like an addict (which I am), but I don't see myself ever needing more than this at least until I relocate and having a dedicated spcace to bulid a rack mounted server

You could also replace TrueNAS with PVE and keep using the hardware.

yeah I know, but i'd rather dedicate the new hardware to other virtualization projects
