#Odd App behavior on TailScale

My setup is HAOS at home, and an IPhone 16 Pro running the latest IOS 26, and using Tailscale to access the HAOS while away.

While outside my home recently, I brought up the app and was able to see all my HA data, but I could not make changes. They just seemed to spin or silently fail. When I returned home things worked fine.

Seeing that an add-on needed updating, I tapped on the Notification in settings, the update screen comes up, but the section which shows what's changed just showed a spinning circle. Pressing the update button had no effect.

Another failure was me looking at the automation I had, and trying to delete one. It just did nothing.

It's almost like HTTP GET is working fine, but other HTTP methods are not.

  1. Suggestions for what might be wrong or misconfigured?
  2. Suggestions for where I can get detailed information on exactly what failed -- I'm an experience software engineer. with decades of web-development, so please be technical if needed.

Whats your "Companion app settings > Server name > connection security level" configuration?

What have you defined as home SSID under "Companion app settings > Server name > Internal URL" ?

When using “Most Secure” the internal URL will only be used when connected to the defined “home” SSID.
So if you remote connect to your home over VPN your only option right now is to select “Less secure” and make sure to always be connected to VPN

But why are you using Tailscale if you already have a remote URL?

the remote URL IS a tailscale host.

oh ok, then ignore what I said before, I had another setup in mind

#

So double checking:

  • App can access internal URL when you are at home
  • App can access external URL when remotely

But you see some issues while using home assistant itself even though you see the UI and can browse your devices, correct?

yes, if on the external URL

Do you see the same happening if you access through iOS safari?

Ah. Haven't tried that I'll give that a go later today and report back.

Ok, if you experience the same issue then your Tailscale connection has something misconfigured but then its a bit out of my area of expertise you would need to check in some network channel
