You will probably have to modify the firmware on the VPE.
Do you have any experience with modifying ESPHome firmware?

cool no worries. It shouldn't really be that difficult to just remove the specific play_sound script calls you want to avoid from the button section.
as you say, the ESPHome discord will probably be better equipped to help with that, good luck with it. 🙂
