Basically i want to have a device in each of my rooms with a display and 4 buttons. 2 buttons for the lights and 2 for switching through information on the display. things like weather, temp, news, maybe messages ?

you could DIY one pretty easily with a Raspberry Pi and Touch Display 2, add a few buttons with the GPIO or you could look at something like the Sonoff NSPanel Pro but it doesn't have any buttons so you would need to get creative with dashboards (don't own one so don't know if its shit)
