#Zigbee or Matter

Hi, as of today, expand your ZigBee network. And take in account that Matter is not a network protocol 🙂
100% zigbee
matter over thread and mater over wifi is really immature at this point.
Yep, go for zigbee and wait. There are projects to run them both but are immature,so wait a while.
I am pretty new and started running zigbee and matter, I have to agree with the above statements.. focus on your Zigbee network.
If you want to pick up a few matter-over-wifi devices, these weren't hard to set up and work well enough. No reason not to go there unless you need a lot of them.
I got tempted with some matter-over-thread devices from Ikea that require a thread network and I find that this is a pain to setup and maintain when you aren't using proprietary devices (I didn't have any - maybe a pain with them also).
I stopped buying Ikea devices because of that unless they are zigbee.
Well that is going to be a nogo soon, as the zigbee ones are being discontinued
Well the matter devices do work pretty well. I just find zigbee2mqtt is so much more polished and robust vs the OTBR I have instaled in a container.
I am sure it will improve
does depend on what you're using for edge routers
SONOFF Dongle Max I tried to integrate the other day is going back, as nothing zigbee I have will connect to it through Z2M
Yah I used an ZBT-1 with openthread/otbr:latest
I can't use a ZBT-1, HA is on a VM on a machine that doesn't have USB ports
and not setting up yet another machine just to plug a USB in
You can try the ESPHome OTBR... I kinda wish I had gone that way myself
at this point I probably won't bother - only got 7 zigbee devices, but nearly 100 matter ones
Bodged the zigbee ones onto a philips bridge with emulated hue
when and if the philips bridge dies, zigbee stuff will just get replaced
there is no "esphome" border router; espressif provides some example code for making a thread border router built using esp-idf at https://github.com/espressif/esp-thread-br (which works, i use it, but isn't easy to set up)
Roughly 60 zigbee and yes you guessed right, zero matter.
fwiw, the new ikea kajpalts bulbs apparently support both matter/thread and zigbee (need a special reset sequence to switch to zigbee). the current hue bulbs support both as well.
I'm looking for Ikea making it official
on the kajplats, support for zigbee touchlink to allow the bulbs to be paired directly with remotes is official, support for pairing with a coordinator is unofficial but appears to work for many people :/
i've just gone and checked, on the e14's at least, flick on/off 12 times and it went into zigbee pairing mode and philips hue bridge saw it immediately
