in the built in dashboard it is listing all my hue lights and the master group. the master group provides quick access to its children when clicking on it. i like that. is there a way to hide the child entities from the main view in the built in dashboard?

You can hide the children via visible flag, but that will also hide from the more-info. There's no separate control.

seemingly removing them from an area accomplishes this ? but then i would lose room context for other things, e.g. google home assistant control
