Matter Over Wifi on Matter Over Thread

I am slightly confused by matter over thread and matter over wifi.

I just got a device working on matter over thread I think 🙂 Its the TIMMERFLOTTE from Ikea. Now that it is working I wanted to add a new device to the network. However this device on Amazon is saying its Matter over WIFI(haven't purchased yet). Will this work on my matter over thread setup I am using an SLZB-06 setup as Matter Over Thread device using OTBR. to be fair, matter is a confusing mess currently.

That is a wifi device. so it needs to connect to a matter server over a wifi network that has IPV6. it doesn't talk through a thread border router because it is not using thread.

be warned that it may not support all features over matter. sometimes manufactures (including tp-link) only provide basic on/off by matter so they can claim they are "matter compatible" and then force you to have an account and use their app for energy monitoring or other features.

Seems one of the Amazon reviews specifically addressed that this device was working with energy monitoring over Matter with HA. This option might be worth the try given Amazons generous return policy.

"I paired mine through Home Assistant and have tried both the Matter and Tapo integration. Matter works great for me with absolutely no issues. The Tapo integration also worked well and works even when you disable cloud integration to the device (I blocked the power strip from access the internet). Entities are organized better in Home Assistant using the Tapo integration but I ended up sticking with Matter as I did not want to rely on a third-party integration that may or may not be maintained long term.

The good news is that with the latest firmware as of October 2025, all power monitoring features were accessible and usable via Home Assistant. The refresh intervals are about 2-3 seconds apart vs some other smart plugs I have that a roughly one second interval but it still suits my needs."

Nice thanks for catching that I am going to give it a try as its the only thing that exists. My only question is it Matter Over Wifi or Matter Over Thread. This part gets confusing for me. Will it work on my Matter Over Thread setup. I want to avoid wifi and use it for regular everyday devices and not smart home devices. I am sticking with Zigbee, Matter Over Thread, Lora(Yo-Link) and eventual BlueTooth.

No it will not use thread networking it is a matter over Wi-Fi device.

Yeah looks like I will be going the more expensive route. That would be surge protector that allows multiple different positions of plug and Third Reality Plugs for the for each outlet.

Awesome I have a ton of their single plugs in the network and they work really well.
