#Matter over Thread devices dropping from network

After having a lot of issues with devices disappearing from the Zigbee network (ZBT-1, ZHA) such that I have to use their pairing button to make HA find them again, I had enough the issue and started to replace my network. Now I have a ZBT-2 (which has a bigger antenna, at least I hoped so) and Matter of Thread devices (from IKEA). Sadly, just two days later, some devices are offline again, the same issues I had with my Zigbee network. What can I even do to start debugging this? Adding devices worked great, interaction with some is also basically real-time. But now that two of my nodes are gone, they're seemingly just gone.

I have two Wi-Fi networks on channel 1 and 6. There are also a lot of additional networks from my neighbors I have no control over, some also on channel 11, as they most likely see my networks and use the "free" space. My Zigbee network is running on channel 25, my Thread network started on 15 (which is when some devices dropped from the network for the first time), now it is on 22 (btw all devices followed the channel change, even two of the offline devices came back online on the new channel). All antennas are as far away from each other as possible, although the ZBT-1, ZBT-2 and one USB 3 device are still in less than 50cm of each other.

Currently I have 11 devices (2 to 12, with 9 and 12 currently not powered (those are lamps which are mains powered and not turned on)). My problematic devices this time are nodes 6 and 8. One of them is directly behind a wall, about 30cm away from the antenna. In the room with antenna as well as the other room there is an online mains powered lamp.

Matter over Thread devices dropping from network

This is a network scan from my phone close to the antenna. The channel 6 network is mine, same as one channel 1 network.

#

If this would be just an issue with network interference, I would expect event communication to be affected as well. But my motion sensor, buttons and lamps are reacting in real-time (which was the same with my Zigbee network btw). The "only" issue that devices disconnect and do not come back.

Would like to bump this. In the meantime, one device disappeared again. Restarting the matter server didn't help. What did help, was restarting the OTBR addon. This make me think that it likely isn't a connectivity, but a software issue with the board router?

I'm having the same issues as you. Also, used to have a ZBT-1 as the zigbee adapter. When I got the ZBT-2, I used the ZBT-2 as zigbee and the ZBT-1 as thread. Also losing 14 out of 34 zigbee device on a daily rate. Wifi on channel 1, zigbee on channel 26 and thread on channel 20.

If you want, you can try installing the latest Thread/RCP beta firmware on your ZBT-2. To do that, go to Settings -> Devices & services -> ZBT-2 -> ZBT-2 entry. On the device page of the ZBT-2, press "+1 disabled entity", and enable that beta firmware updates entity. After it's enabled, activate it. If you then check for updates in HA settings, you should find an update for the latest Thread/RCP beta firmware. This could improve some things.

So after one or two devices kept disconnecting from time to time and came back after a restart of the OTBR, half my network dropped yesterday. And I'm unable to get it back.

#

I restarted the matter server, OTBR, HA, power cycles the HA Green including the antenna, nothing. Half of my Thread devices stay offline.

Hey guys, I really need some good ideas here. This time the whole network was lost. All devices are shown offline. I have restarted the border router, matter and even rebooted the whole system. Nothing comes back.

Looking into the OTBR web interface it seem like I'm not part of my Thread network anymore.

Nothing that use to connect to Matter works for me anymore either, what’s the point of these threads if the devs won’t come in a provide input into possible problem?

I guess I'll open tickets and hope they get seen. Since yesterday my antenna/border router are not part of the Thread network anymore. I can see a network via the web UI, but the OTBR is not joining it.

Hmm…it had become mind racking that I just replaced the Ethernet box and it all started working! 😱

So I connect my HA machine using Ethernet cord instead of WiFi, I got a new mesh system and Ethernet splitter and it started working again…it must’ve been a hardware issue…

uh, "ethernet splitter" isn't a thing... do you mean a switch?

#

(i have seen devices sold as "ethernet splitters" but they aren't actually useful, since they just connect everything together without any logic; they can sometimes kinda work if only one device is ever turned on at a time)
