#Looking for a Zwave Lock, with all the pro's and cons
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I have a couple of UTec u-bolt pro locks.
They’re fine from a zwave perspective and integrate well into zwavejs and ha.
The app to set up codes uses Bluetooth which is janky.
The fingerprint reader is hit and miss
I have the Yale Assure Lock 2 YRD450-ZW2. They've been solid for the most part. Had some issues joining zwave as they have the old modules that only support s0. But I am unable to find or buy the ZW3 module to add support for s2 to them. Yale just doesn't' seem to offer the modules by themselves for whatever reason. Aside from that no real complaints. They don't chew batteries and have just been working for a few years now.
I'll be watching this thread too as I'd like to get the locks on s2 but Yale seems to make it impossible.
Ah! I had to set them up orignally through the Yale app then add them to HA. Previously I had done the same with SmartThings. I also currently manage the codes through the Yale app as Keymaster was giving me fits.
Yale recently started bricking the Zwave functionality in some of their locks if your device is still connected to the Yale app through an automatic update. This is why I'm likely going to avoid them
They are removing the functionality on purpose
Hmm they still sell zwave Yale branded locks. Are they just targeting August for some reason? Weird...
Thanks for sharing though. I didn't know all that was going on. On top of not being able to buy the modules independently of the entire lock.
Not sure, but it's enough to make me think twice about buying yale
🤷♂️
Ya I get it. Same here. The module already left a bad taste in my mouth. And this just adds to it.
My zwave assure lock 2 just started acting up. The yale support dude asked if homeassistant was an ipad ("no i mean like an ipad, digitial display"). I narrowed it down to a firmware update and he tried to say he could not provide a solution, and i had to convince him to submit a ticket while he was busy cutting me off. Do not buy from them, they're terrible.
I’ve had the Kwikset 888 Smartcode for about 3 years now. I had intermittent issues with it pairing and staying connected to my HUSBZB-1 controller which was in the basement and far away from the lock. However I wasn’t having issues with other in-wall zwave devices that were even further away.
But after upgrading 5 months ago to a TubesZB/ZWave combo POE controller that is centrally located, I haven’t had a single problem. It doesn’t like rechargeable NiCd (1.2V) batteries, but other than that it is solid. I will probably buy another one now that I have the issues sorted.
The 888 is discontinued but the newer models look pretty similar.
Odd about the rechargable. Do they die quick?
They just start at 1.2V instead of the alkaline 1.5V so the lock thinks they are dying even when they’re freshly charged. They do make rechargeable batteries that have tiny dc/dc converters integrated to match what an alkaline battery puts out. But I am already invested in the eneloops and don’t want another brand & charger to worry about.

I don’t have this model but I’ve seen it highly reviewed.
Seems to be one of the few with a fingerprint sensor option.
Interesting, I did not know philips made any zwave products
Does that one have a keyway? One of the reasons I chose the Yale was I could buy a model without a keyway. Can't pick anything that way.
It does look really nice though.
Eh. It's cheap insurance as I have no use for a key anyway and makes it so my wife and I don't have to carry one.
It does behind that circular black part
Ok thank you!
I couldn't find any picture showing it.

Been using this guy for 2-3 years. No issues. Batteries can run down a little but, but I use eneloop and usually swap them 1-2x a year.
I’ve had Kwikset 6hundred something a year and a half with no troubles other than changing batteries twice and one an occasional wake up button press.
it does suck as the yale locks arguably look so much better than the competitors
Agreed. And do any other have the module that you could in theory upgrade? Not that yale has made that easy or work well...
Kwikset do
