#confusion about matter/thread and ikea dirigera hub

it seems the more i read on this topic, the more confused i'm becoming!

i bought the ikea dirigera hub and some myggspray motion sensors thinking i could connect them to my exiting ha setup

i've added the dirigera and a myggspray to the ikea home smart app and i'm now trying to add it to ha

in the ikea home smart app, i select the myggspray, click the wrench, select "connect via qr code" and copy the code

in the ha companion app, i go to "devices & services", select the "devices" tab, click "add device", select "add matter device", select "yes. it's already in use", select "other controllers", paste the code and click "add device", it then shows a spinner with "adding the new device, this may take a minute or two", but never completes and doesn't add the myggspray

i'm beginning to think that buying the dirigera was a mistake and i should have bought a zbt-2 instead

if i do get a zbt-2, presumably i could add the myggsprays, or any other ikea matter/thread, directly to ha?

yeah set up the zbt-2 in thread mode and can use that.

can we not do thread integration with the zbt-1 also ?

the dirigera should be acting as a thread border router, so assuming there's no network issues between the dirigera and your home assistant that would prevent mDNS or ipv6 router announcements from working, you should be able to add the matter devices even if home assistant doesn't know anything else about the dirigera.

if you add via the ikea app first and then share to home assistant, home assistant does not ever need to know the network credentials

#

but it's possible the ikea app might load the credentials into your phone, which in some cases the companion app can then read to load into home assistant.

yeah, the OP is describing something that should be working (if the devices are added to the dirigera hub already, then they're connected to thread, and sharing to home assistant should work via "on network" commissioning as long as there isn't any problems in the home network between home assistant and the dirigera hub)

#

given that this didn't work, there's some sort of network issue. Switching to using home assistant as an OTBR might let home assistant talk to thread devices - but it's possible they'll run into other network-related issues such as problems commissioning new devices directly to Home assistant from their phone, or not being able to share devices from home assistant to other matter controllers.

so it would be good to figure out the network problems.
