I’m running Home Assistant and want to integrate old roller shutters (no smart features yet).
What’s the best way to control them?
Smart relay behind the wall switch?
Zigbee vs Wi-Fi vs Shelly?
Any recommendations for reliable + local control?
Things to watch out for with old motors?
Looking for a clean and future-proof solution. Thanks!

Any ideas?

I’d go with any 868mhz based system as it has better range than wifi and is generally more stable. Homematic is reliable and works directly in home assistant, some zigbee are sub GHz.
With homematic you need to check if your old switch covers fit, Shelly needs a bit more wiring / depth in the outlets and it can get tight

done my shutters last week. Palmat motor and Shelly 2PM Gen4

#

Gen4 has zigbee onboard

#

palmat is a dumb e-motor and shelly does the thinking, including obstacle detection

#

reliable and local

#

and it expands your zigbee network

#

And it works for big shutters outside too?

glacial coral
#

yes, that's what i meant 😉

you have to look at the shutters itself. Plastic / aluminium / aluminium with foam inside / wood. They all have a different weight wich should be calculated for the right motor with the right amount of NewtonMeter

#

and the "wellendurchmesser" sechskantwelle (SW) 40 or 60 mm

#

what material are your shutters?

#

exeample: if your shutters are PVC, it counts as 4kg per square meter. Measure shutter and convert into the right m2

#

For Alu shutters it will be 7-10 kg per square meter.

#

If your shutters are WIDER than 3 meters, you'll need to calculate 6kg/m2 for PVC, and 10kg/m2 for aluminium

#

if you calculated the weight, take a look here: https://palmat.eu/de/products/palmat-tubular-motor-with-mechanical-limit for the right model

Normally, you dont need an adapter.

I have aluminium with foam inside, the right Wellendurchmesser ist mit nicht bekannt, the shutters are 2m X2 m ca.

glacial coral
#

check wellendurchmesser (normally 60) and go for 60SW 25KG

#

thats the one i bought too

#

Safety disclaimer: Always shut down complete power before connecting anything !!!

How do I connect the shelly to the shutter then trough the switch?

glacial coral
next dove

Do I have to look if I have a neutral wire or can I be certain that I have one?

glacial coral
#

always check

next dove
#

And if I have no neutral wire can I install one without a neutral required?

glacial coral

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKbspaRY6cU have to do some reading on shelly site 😉 i am off for the next hours, take a look and note Michael (Piezor) comments on that from the other thread

A versatile dual-channel smart switch that lets you automate and manage roller shutters, curtains, awnings, pool covers, and bi-directional AC motors. With new multiprotocol connectivity, you can choose the protocol that best suits your home network - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Zigbee. normally there has to be a neutral wire though

Thank you

It is 2.4m X 2m wide

Aluminium with foam

And about 6cm Durchmesser

I got it working tough

But it is really slow like REALLY slow

#

I think it is to cold

#

But I can not really see the wires in the switches tough

next dove
#

Do you think that i will need extra wiring?

#

So like to connect the switch of the shutters with the shelly?

next dove
#

Hi

#

I got my Shellys do you use them too?

#

@glacial coral I heard that these Shelly's are supposed to use ZigBee but somehow that does not work correctly?

glacial coral
#

press button 5 times quickly, that forces zigbee mode. Otherwise access the AP that shelly sends out. In software you then can switch to zigbee.

#

Okay and you had no problems right?

glacial coral
#

nope

I had my shutters (4) running first on Tuya devices, but yes, switched later to HA so i wanted better integration. So i replaced the Tuya devices with Sonoff-Dual-R3 flashed with Tasmota (in shutter operation). That was running great as it could keep track of the exact position of the shutters. If i would open or close them manually a little bit, it knew the position. But keeping up with firmware updates is a headache with Tasmota, so later i switched to Shelly Plus2PM devices. Lacks the posotion memory but better integration with HA.
What i found important:

  1. Be sure that the manual wall switches still work for easy manual operation.
  2. My shutters have integrated end-stops, so timing is not important for complete closing or opening. Better too long than too short. This might be different if you don't have automatic end stop.
  3. I prefer WiFi (seperate Home Automation VLAN). Devices are powered by mains anyway and in my case more stable (good WiFi network 😜 ). Zigbee was not stable enough for me.
  4. Packing the devices behind your wall switches might be problematic. Choose for the small ones (Shelly-mini) if they can handle the load. In one case i made the decicion to connect two adjacent similar shutters to one Shelly, so removed 1 manual swith to create room for a Shelly. Operating the two shutters with one switch/device was no problem.
  5. Instead of trying to calculate the power usage of the motors try to measure with and AMPERE meter, or any other measuring device (every thutter separate if they differ in size). Then apply a healthy margin, and everything will be OK. It will be less than expected.....

shelly i adviced has obstruction detection and knows it's postion 😉 @frank quarry

#

besides that home assistant does not handle vlans very well, at least..

I bought these 2

Do you think that I need a electrician who does install them? Or can I do it by myself?

glacial coral
#

if you are not shure, electrician..

next dove
#

Hi

#

A electrician has done it

#

And it has worked but not with ZigBee

#

So I have changed them to zigbee unfortunately I can not connect to them

#

I need to get them out of the wall to press this reset button

#

Is that possible when turning off power?

glacial coral
#

you can try to flip the breaker (sicherungskasten, gruppe) for 10 seconds, then flip back on. then click your wall switch 5x (the one you use for physical up/down connected to shelly) Make shure to set Z2M in pairingmode first. That should work without opening the box in the wall

#

otherwise check the shelly integration and see if you can switch there from wifi to zigbee, dont know about that

#

before switching to zigbee, make shure you have done the calibration for the shelly. This is easier with wifi then with zigbee

#

It will keep the settings while changing

Do you think it is okay to use AliExpress shutter switches?

#

Like these?

next dove
#

Cause in the internet it says to do so I have to open up the wall

glacial coral
#

i haven't used them, so i can't answer 😉

next dove
#

It works but I can not connect them via ZigBee to Mqtt to homeasstant

next dove
#

It works not over ZigBee

Is this good?

Losing you. I thought you wanted to switch from wifi to zigbee and add it to z2m. ??

glacial coral
#

but the question was how to pair the 2pm gen4 to z2m, right. As said above, try the procedure with 5x clicking this:

otherwise i dont know.

#

so your shelly is now connected with z2m and running??

glacial coral

again, stay away, far away from tuya related stuff. as (allmost) everybody will say on this discord 😉
