#Automations false firing based on zone

Set up an automation today , when my entity id enters home zone… open garage.

I use icloudv3 tracker/companion app. It seems to glitch sometimes and shows me as away momentarily before returning home again…. This causes the garage to open even though I did not leave and then return.

Anyone have any good ideas on how to further conditionalize the automation to avoid this issue ?

I had a similar problem, so here was my solution.

  1. In Settings -> Devices -> Helpers create a Toggle helper. I named mine "Don has left the building"
  2. Create a separate automation, trigger is you being away for 5 minutes (or whatever you choose), action is to turn on that toggle.
  3. Update your existing automation, add a condition that checks for that toggle being on. If it's off (meaning you haven't been away for long) then nothing happens. If it's on then it should open the garage. Add a second action to turn off the toggle.

It’s a great idea, but a potential issues.

  1. The “away” glitch isn’t always just for a few seconds…. Sometimes I am shows as “away” for up to 10-15 min before showing back home. So a quick trip to the cornerstore and the toggle won’t be set for my return.

I want to eventually have a reverse automation ( close garage when leaving) but I want to avoid this same issue , closing when I haven’t really left) but I also don’t want it to take 10 min before registering me as left.

I find using a reserved IP for the phone and a ping sensor, the most reliable way, another option is to use the Wifi SSID so if the phone is on the Wifi you are home.
