#Big appliances, smarthings or LG?

As a geek/nerd/HA fan/smart home fan I can honestly say…. Don’t bother. All the big brands will rely on cloud services, leaving you screwed for eventual if not immediate subscription charges and all the other reliability nonsense.
Instead, get the best appliance you can afford without any external connectivity smarts and use smart plugs with power meters and vibration sensors for your automations.
Oh some more advice: don’t fix on one brand. It honestly makes very little sense. Buy the best you can afford for each product. Mele might make decent washing machine but who knows about there fridges etc.
That’s my advice. Take it or leave it. 🤗
to add to this, using power monitoring is good but regular smart plugs with relays in them can cause issues for appliances with inductive loads. there are options for monitoring without relays though.
Like most people here, im a tech nerd and live HASS integrations, so I went all in for the smart appliances.
What a waste! I think the only really useful thing was being able to monitor when laundry was done, or how much time left - which can be monitored by a smart plug.
Ohhh yes, also to set the light of the cooker hood and dishwasher to align with the rest of the kitchen...
Some examples of remote functions;
Changing temp in freezer or fridge remotely. Never really used it. Possibly monitor temps.
Turn on/off ice machine. Never needed, always on.
Download programs for laundry or dishwasher. Had space for 1 (one) custom program, so had to do the full process each time. Could not really notice any difference vs built-in programs and was faster to manually adjust them.
Same for cook top and owen.
Nahhh, fun and exciting for the first time. But not worth it.
thanks for the feedback!
if you dont mind me asking, what cook top do u have?
We sold that house a year ago, but we had mostly Siemens appliances,
We had this combo EX907LXV5E (https://www.siemens-home.bsh-group.com/se/sv/product/EX907LXV5E) and LC91KWW62S (https://www.siemens-home.bsh-group.com/se/sv/product/LC91KWW62S) which could talk with each other and be controlled by the Home Connect app.
The led light could be changed and it gave a nice touch to the kitchen.
Those two could talk with each other and it would automatically adjust the fan based on the settings on the induction hob. Though the thing i really enjoyed the most with it, was that it did not have any fixed sizes of the zones. You could basically put any size of the pot on it, up to 5 of them if i remember correctly, and it would heat just the area they were using.
That was the best we've had in any of the places we have lived.
Bosch and GE have local HA integrations I believe
Highly don’t recommend Samsung appliances
Local?? Interesting
Our LG fridge ice maker is also starting to give out so I can’t really recommend them to be awesome either
I have experience with smartthings albeit just small sensors
Not great tnks
Yeah.. fridge is only from 2018
Not a cheap model either… pretty disappointing
Have a relative with a Samsung Family Hub fridge and that’s also having issues despite being from 2020 only
the screen isn’t worth it also since it runs Tizen and you can’t do much on it
Really? Ive been eyeing the new bespoke ai hub one
The screen on the samsung one cant run a normal browser??
It can but it’s very finicky
not worth it
better off just getting a wall mount tablet if you really want that
The Alexa integration is also really crap. Last I tried it couldn’t even play music
I’d also avoid whirlpool brands. We have mostly whirlpool in our home.. dishwasher started rusting on the outside after a year. Kitchen oven/microwave combo crashes and force reboots once connected to the internet.. and the range top is just average
Bosch, GE, or Miele are the only relatively safe bets I’ve heard of recently in terms of appliances
6 year old Bosch tumble dryer is still tumbling away. The 1 year old dishwasher is Bosch and so far so good. Been amazing actually, which is a funny thing to say about dishwasher but there. Deliberately didn’t get the smart one. Wouldn’t have got it even if cheaper.
Don’t think much of Samsung stuff either. 5 year old fridge/freezer has many cracked shelves and other superficial problems. Still cold though. 🙂 Washing machine barely lasted 2 years. Replaced with LG which is holding out well. Non smart. 🙂
speaking of Samsung Family Hub fridge...
Have had that too! If we had not been so heavily invested in Apples Ecosystem and been running Androids it might have been more useful.
The built-in camera to see what's inside was useless. When you have it normally stocked, it's impossible to see well enough to identify if something is missing. That only works in demo mode when it's very empty.
The only apps we liked and used were;
- Calendar sync for o365
- Photos of our dog for screen saver
- Weather app
Too limited for using the browser, too slow for streaming video/streaming tv well and the speaker was crap (had Sonos speakers in the kitchen instead).
ty for the feedback, may i ask which model do u have? i wonder if the new ai one has better processing power that would help browser speed
im like 1 hour away from the nearest shop holding one of the newer models
