Hey all,

I’ve been getting deeper and deeper into Home Assistant the past few months and I wanted to get a dedicated device for the Home Assistant dashboard. My goal is to find something I could leave in my kitchen for my family to use.

While looking for recommendations from others on the subreddit, I found this comment warning against using tablets for this: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/s/jz99C5OllQ

It seems like a very reasonable point.

So my question here is, what device would you recommend using as a dedicated Home Assistant dashboard? Ideally a battery-less device based on this comment 😂

Thank you for any/all help! I appreciate it greatly 🙂

# tender oxide Hey all, I’ve been getting deeper and deeper into Home Assistant the past few ...

I have a tablet in my kitchen but it has a battery saver option, it starts/stops charging to keep the battery 40-60% to try to avoid the issue. (you can simulate this with a smartplug and an automation if device doesn't do it built in)

it also depends how "fixed" in it will be, mine is not fully fixed into the wall so concern is lower. it was supposed to be temporary but as we all know... there is nothing more permanent than a temporary setup...

however there are some android based non battery devices, in fact there was a video on some devices today that might be of interest. check this out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBU4yU9eD2U

I have had multiple tablets for HA. All in places where they had power. So, a battery was not necessary.

All have automations that keep the battery between 25 and 80 percent.

One died. The others still going.

I have a couple of RPI 3 Bs. So, I grabbed some screens for them and am setting them up. These will be my replacements when the others die.

I also grabbed a very cheap mini PC that hangs on the back of our TV stand and feeds two different mini screens. One is 7 inches and the other is 12 inches. That replaced two battery tablets I had there in preparation for dead batteries. Both are still working and in use in other places for now.

I am using one of the RPIs for a kitchen 'tablet' that will pull out from under the cabinet to be used for recipe prep/adding ingredients to the shopping list.

I have a Spotify Carthing, now running Deskthing. They have a Home Assistant Dashboard on the todo list so I'm patiently awaiting that pepe_stevejobs

# foggy cairn a full dashboard is likely going to be too heavy for that hardware. although the...

100%, I was also seeing some suggestions to use this: https://www.amazon.com/ApoloSign-Digital-Calendar-Multi-calendar-Touchscreen/dp/B0FDGF47NR

which seems super interesting

Update: I have an Echo Show 8 (1st gen) that I wiped and installed LineageOS on. Got Home Assistant Companion running in full screen and it works perfectly 🙂

Only thing left for me to do now is figure out how to add Music Assistant to the dashboard

Just enable it in the addon settings. -> settings -> addons -> music assistant -> enable add to home menu

I am curious how a rooted Echo Show performs for HA. Do the mics work for voice, is it smooth, etc
