its a gen3 device it doesn't support any type of zigbee
gen4 devices support zigbee

both support matter over wifi though (with latest firmware) (needs ipv6 network too)

matter and matter-over-thread are not really the same thing.
there seems to be a bit of a marketing fail with this in the industry to be fair.

most likely it is using BT to provision which then adds the wifi creds for main operation. I do not suggest running stuff on different networks, it only causes problems.

I just use my shelly stuff over the local shelly API and not matter so i dont have much experience with it but have you looked to see if there is beta firmware available for the device? its not unusual for shelly to have beta firmware's available and they might have more functionality. although perhaps its a choice so they sell newer models as they roll out.

as for marketing/packaging with the right thing on it... well this seems to be a bit of a fail in the industry currently. for a few companies at least they probably dont care because when questioned their solution is to pay them more money to buy their "hub". and its setting s bit of a standard. hopefully it will sort itself out in time.

I am not saying that this is "impossible" but it would be a terrible idea.

tbh if i dont trust a device to only grab trustworthy firmware updates then I just don't have the device.

it depends on the device and how its set up. the majority of devices pull updates themselves and the firmware entity on HA just calls the update process on the device.

I think the OHF hired a new documentation person recently but also the documentation is opensource and anyone can add to it.
a bunch of devices to BT commissioning but not all. shelly devices by deffault also broadcast a wifi network which you can connect to and access thee webui to commission (this is how i usually do it)
