I'm new to HAS and loving it so far. I'm having an issue with Kasa Smart Plug KP125MP2. I have set the plug up on the Kasa app. HAS sees the plug. When I try to add it to HAS it says I have to authenticate with TP-Link, so I add my username and password and get the following error.

I've tried the following:

Enabling third party apps in the Kasa app.
Resetting my TP-Link Password
Made my password much simpler (lower case and numbers only)
Factory reset the plug multiple times
Tried login out of the Kasa app and adding the device

Still no go....any ideas on what's happening?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

its a thing tp-link put in to annoy everyone. FYI: they occasionally turn it off again at random and one day they might remove the ability to use it.
my general advice is to not buy any more tp-link stuff (Kasa/Tapo) because they cant be trusted

Yeah, I tried that...under Settings. Third-Party Compatibility is enabled

Welcome to the party that is home assistant btw!

thank you!

some people have reported it just not working at all. but most can get it working by messing with it a bit.

would you recommend any other smart plug with energy monitoring? I'm new, so I don't have a lot of hardware yet...I have ordered a Zigbee dongle but waiting for it to arrive

It's frustrating because I have a few other Kasa plugs (that don't include energy monitoring) that have worked perfectly, but they didn't need the authentication.

idle totem
#

a few of those will help you build out your zigbee mesh too

craggy bay
#

sorry...I'm in Canada

#

I don't post in forums and haven't really used Discord much, so don't know all of the rules and norms.

these are zigbee - https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/inspelning-plug-smart-energy-monitor-90569846/ and will work with home assistant and a zigbee adaptor

#

they are possibly being discontinued soon though because ikea is moving to a matter over thread lineup

craggy bay
#

that's a reasonable price too.

idle totem
#

yeah, i recently set up a zigbee network properly for the first time with the new ZBT-2 and i got a bunch of them (UK Version) cos its a decent price.

craggy bay
#

I think I'll pick up a couple of these and try them once I get the zigbee usb dongle. thank you for the recommendation CasitaHappy

hoping it will work ok

#

I wasn't certain if I should get the P model, but in the end I did....

idle totem
craggy bay
#

Oh, that makes sense...get it away from other gear?

idle totem
#

that one focuses on the issue off being near usb3 controllers and devices but theres a bunch of other things that can cause issues..

craggy bay
#

I see

#

Have you tried using Thread on it?

#

quite a bit more expensive then the Sonoff. probably better quality for sure...

#

With delivery in Canada it's around $110

idle totem
#

a coordinator can only be zigbee OR thread at once (there are technically exceptions but we don't talk about them...) although if you have 2 you can use both 😛 I just run zigbee currently no thread.

craggy bay
#

to confirm, that Ikea plug would work without the Ikea hub? as long as I have the Sonoff dongle?

idle totem
#

110 seems steep, i have heard other people from canada mention this issue. I am in the UK and its 38GBP which is about 70CAD

idle totem
#

the hub is just their zigbee coordinator, but you have your own so you don't need it.

#

they push people that its "needeed" because otherwise people get it and complain that it doesnt connect to their wifi etc... because they have no idea what zigbee actually is.

#

i get it from a marketing point of view tbh. the people that know otherwise also know to ignore what it says.

craggy bay
#

Yes, I can completely understand why the present it this way

#

have you tried the Ikea TIMMERFLOTTE?

#

temp and humidity sensor?

idle totem
#

that's one of the newer ones thats based on matter over thread i think?

craggy bay
#

oh it's not zigbee?

#

thought it was part of the same line

idle totem
#

there might be an older one that is zigbee i am not sure. their lines are in flux currently

craggy bay
#

yes, looks like it uses Matter

#

I could use the Matter server in HAS to connect to it, couldn't I?

idle totem
#

sonoff make a temp/humidity sensor you can pick up cheap on AE though.

craggy bay
#

or is Matter bluetooth only and would need to be near my HAS server to connect

idle totem
#

matter can either be via wifi OR by thread

#

so if its wifi matter then you could, however if its matter over thread which means you need a thread coordinator

#

thread is "sort of zigbee" its different but it uses the same hardware. so if you add another coordinator you can have one set up as zigbee and the other as thread (NB: you need to space them at least 25 cm apart)

craggy bay
#

I see...that's what's nice about the ZBT-2 it can hanlde both?

idle totem
#

it cannot do both at the same time

#

but for example if you were to get one you could use it for zigbee and the sonoff for thread (or the other way around)

craggy bay
#

nice chatting...I have to run. thanks a lot for the valuable info!

#

need to pick up my kid!
