Hi,
as the title already mentioned, I am quite new to this whole DIY smarthome thing.

I have following things:

  • many smart plugs from vesync
  • solar panels on my roof from Fronius
  • 2x NAS from Synology with a couple of security cameras
  • Maybe 12 smart home lights from Govee.

What would be a good box to get that can support all those devices with ease?
I do also have an old PC, that i could use, but that thing would eat too much power, that's why i would rather get the box directly from HA.

so uh i am not good with suggesting hardware but probably for those any ha box would directly from nabu casa would do so what i would suggest is just get whatever is easier and requires less diy if you are new

#

and if you dont want to spend any cash you can probably run it as a container on those nases from synology

#

take my suggestion with a grain of salt because i am no expert when it comes to ha hardware just my suggestion

#

side note of course no matter how powerful the box is if ha itself doesnt support the brand and there are no third party integration then you cant connect them although i highly doubt you will run into that problem ha has an absurd number of integrations

However, the linked miniPC there is sold out

spark tulip
#

just a reminder mini pcs need more setup but that is no problem there are great guides and videos onlines plus the guide on the ha site is awesome

#

in itself if you are a bit technical it will be no biggie

compact tangle
#

I have run VMs and other enviroments before, so that should not be an issue

spark tulip
#

oh yea if you have done that in the past then you are probably fine

I am in the great lands of Bratwurst and Beer.

Do you want to be able to run voice commands locally if the inet is down?

compact tangle
compact tangle
#

currently i have like 5 apps, which is very annoying

if you are thinking new mini-pc then get it early before stocks run out. i can see them disappearing for a bit because it wont be worth putting ram in them.

i recomend beelink only really because i have used them and i have had good experiences. some others are also great

compact tangle
#

aw heck the recording is broken because of HDR, but you get the idea :D

dont worry about that its stuff ha can do if you are technical

slate olive
spark tulip
#

in essence anything and everything can be done with ha if you are technical

compact tangle
limber comet
#

yeah HA can be a small project or a big one really.

slate olive
#

Need to hurry

limber comet
#

the important thing when your first starting out is to take things one at a time and enjoy the small wins. if you try and do everything at once you will burn out etc...

slate olive
#

Also haos backup restore is like a charm. You can easily upgrade your hardware

compact tangle
#

so time might be a big factor here

300 bucks

i would also use it for plex, but then i need hardware encoding e.g. a dedicated gpu

slate olive

depends on quality/stream-count etc...

slate olive
compact tangle
limber comet
#

yeah its worth saying
BOO down with plex
YAY up with jellfin

compact tangle
#

i do have a lifelong license with plex, so it would be stupid not to use it

spark tulip
#

from one day you will be adding lights the other you will be using mqtt

compact tangle
#

oh gawd oh no

limber comet
compact tangle

D:

slate olive
spark tulip
#

i mean you could run ha as an os and then run plex as an addon if you want the easiest solution

spark tulip
#

it all started with debian and casa os and now i am running a proxmox server with ha and a docker vm that runs over 25 services

compact tangle
spark tulip
#

which i dont use half

#

emby

compact tangle
#

riiiiiight, emby

#

also tried that.

#

but man

#

that one sucked

spark tulip
#

i use jellyfin and sonarr radarr to auto organise stuff

slate olive
#

Jellyfin runs at a 7 year old i5 laptop. No issues

compact tangle
#

i tried to get ffmpeg to generate the scrollable video thumbnails automatically from my main PC, but that caused so much slow-down

#

oh and one thing i am very bumbed about is that none of them display a big collection of photos well.

I'm currently using Synology Photos to sync all camera photos from multiple devices with my server.

I first wanted to use plex for that, but that was so bad. You need two seperate android apps to display video or photo on your phone..... which is like, whaaaaaaaaat

spark tulip
#

hey just a good idea for a first atuomation

#

if the nases support wol you can create an automation that restarts them or something

#

i personally want to eventually do that for my pc with wol and rpc shutdown

compact tangle
#

the do even support WOP, but i have a timer for the auto restart, no need for wake on lan

#

I turn my PC on with WOP from my phone with the smart plugs :D

#

Back to the mini PC

#

which one do i get?

#

what if I salvage the old PC i have?

#

It has a rtx 2070s with 32 gigs of ddr3 (i think) ram

#

the processor is very old tho, it's an i7 6700k

#

i would also maybe even want to install win11pro on it, so i can use it as a render node in cinema4D

limber comet
# compact tangle riiiiiight, emby

yeah emby was opensource but they went closed source and jellyfin forked to stay opensourcee at that time. they have been split a long time now and pretty different.

compact tangle
#

yep

limber comet
#

for a mini pc I would look for something with a n150. although some of the newer ones are having issues with ethernet controllers not being supported. but worst case you can add a usb adaptor for now.

compact tangle
#

I think i am actually going to salvage my old PC.

#

it should be cheaper buying just a new MB and low spec CPU than a 300 bucks mini pc

limber comet
#

yeah. sometimes the best hardware is the hardware you already have.

compact tangle
#

Time to play Arc Raider in real life

compact tangle
#

lmao

limber comet
#

its very easy to move in the future if you need to. you just make a backup and restore it on a new install somewhere else.

compact tangle
#

backup of what?

limber comet
compact tangle
#

aaah okay. That is great

limber comet
#

just keep the backup file and the encryption key for it safe 🙂
