I have an automation for my closet light using a presence sensor and a switch. It took some tuning and logic to get the flow how we wanted it. When we woke up this morning, the light wasn’t turning on. I looked at the automation and it seems like it somehow was reverted to it's first save, way back before I added logic and the prior entity name (esphome code was a prototype). This seems like a really odd thing to happen. I need to dig deeper, but I don’t see any others that have changed.

Has anyone heard of this happening? What clues should I use to dig in deeper to figure it out when/why it changed? It's been working for 1-2months. I'm on 2025.11.3 as of last week.

Oh i mean the whole automation went from being a flow chart of states using presence, physical, timer, and a state variable, to be reverted to a simple on/off based on presence.

I restarted, but only after I went in and updated the automation to at least have the right presence entity names, so it would at minimum turn on/off. If a restart may have resolved an issue, it was probably blocked from me saving over it.

Tell me more, i guess i use these interchangeably.

Reboot = reboot the hardware vs restart = restarting the software?

if you want to be shure that changes take place, always use reboot instead of a restart

OK, rebooted. Changes to automation have persisted. Still in the reverted state, though updated to the new entity (which i did this morning).

I am wrong. Pulled my old backups. It looks like the closet automation disappeared sometime between 5pm and 2am, but was in yesterdays backup.

The one i thought it reverted to was just an old one that I left and hadn't cleaned flushed out yet...I need to get better with my naming conventions for automations.

Still strange that it just went missing. any way to look into if someone deleted it or something else?
