#Minimal setup with HA on VM, with ZBT-2 and Ikea Matter devices

I'd like to get started with HA using a quite minimal setup as I'm trying this out to potentially use this as a gift later on. I'm wondering if a ZBT-2 connected to a Windows laptop running the HA VM is enough to operate the new Ikea Matter devices and allows solid expansion later on. For the person I'm thinking of gifting a small setup to the Windows laptop would be replaced with a RaspberryPI, so the gift part would be the ZBT-2 and a few Ikea lights/sensors.

Hope this is making sense 🙂

Does that still require the ZBT-2?

yes

the green is a low power system designed specifically to run HA

windows vm's can be used for some basic testing but also they do seem to have issues with things like usb passthrough. so may not work with a zbt-2. it depends on vaarious factors.

And does Home Assistant Voice Preview work as a standalone system like the Green?

you may have difficulty running a full local voice pipeline with the green. but speech-to-phrase works great. or you can use some online services like "home assistant cloud" to help run more complete voice pipelines.

Did you already buy the ZBT2? How tech literate is the gift receiver?

No not yet, not even for myself either. They've played around with the raspberry pi, now more on 3d printing. So id say at least a medium levle

I don't think a pi is a good idea for a HAOS server: https://gist.github.com/Impact123/6ee130240bdc6a7fed2d5224616544a0
As Michael hinted towards, USB passthrough with Hyper-V is problematic. VirtualBox should work. The thing is that if you get a coordinator like the SLZB-06 you don't need that as you connect to it via the network.
