#Lost Trying to Setup Matter

I'm trying to set up devices using matter in home assistant. I am using the WiFi path. When I try to add a device, using the matter integration, from within home assistant, it just loops, trying to get me to add another integration or something?

I then go to the add on and use the matter UI there, but that fails too. I never explicitly set up ipv6 in my network, and am confused about the need for it to get this to work.

How should I proceed to figure out adding a device with matter?

Running home assistant on raspberry pi 4. I am relatively new to home assistant. Any help is much appreciated!

the "can't find device" message on your phone is where things are going wrong. can't get any further unless you can actually talk to the device you're trying to add. Have you tried following the hints printed in that message?

#

the way first-time commissioning of a wifi matter device works is that your phone connects to the new matter device over bluetooth, and sends the wifi network credentials. it looks like this is the point where it's not working.

#

after that, your phone waits for the matter device to connect to the wifi, and once it is discovered on the wifi, it proceeds with actually configuring the device.

#

the first message on the "can't find device" error page is actually important. for security reasons, you can only run the initial setup of a matter device right after it's powered on.

I did try the suggestions on that screen. Getting to that screen is the problem. It's only happened once. Usually I have to go through the add-on Matter flow that does not show this screen. I will complete these steps a couple more times and get back here.

Please provide more information about your device and what have you tried for the device so far

Is the device already paired with another matter controller?
Can you just factory reset your device?

tawny temple
#

No other matter controller has been paired with these devices

#

I have tried the steps in the troubleshooting list, expect factory reset

#

I will try that next

I will factory reset the M4 and see if I can connect it

✅ What Aqara says (and hoped) about Matter compatibility

  • When launched, the G4 was advertised as a doorbell that “will work with Matter after the specification is officially ready for cameras.”
  • So the intention was: once Matter supports cameras / video doorbells, G4 should — in principle — be capable of receiving an OTA update to add Matter support.

Sorry, M2

#

My first attempt was with this device actually

#

It now makes sense why I was lost when trying to connect to homekit devices, instead of matter devices.

My apologies on all the confusion. It started when there were two ways to "add matter devices" in home assistant and one of them did not work at all

#

I will go back and attempt to connect to this device. I might not have been close enough, physically. Since it's a hard wired switch, I will have to flip the breaker to power cycle, I assume?

check the device documentation - hardwired devices might have a hidden button to reset or enable pairing without needing to power it off.

# tawny temple Thanks, will look into this

Did you get this set up in HA? I can connect the M3 hub with Matter, but not the M2 hub. I needed to put this closer to a U100 Lock in a separate building on my property. Connecting the M2 just spins in HA and eventually just fails. I can't seem to get the lock to show up until I get the M2 set up. It initially bound with the M3, but lost connection so I added the M2.
