I want to set the thermostat setpoint based on the output of another entity/automation. But I can't find any way to assign a variable as the setpoints input or move the value to the setpoint.
I haven't looked much further that the inbuilt automation builder, but maybe the naming just isn't working with me.

You would probably use the climate.set_temperture action

Easiest is to create an input number (number helper) and set that to the desired value.
If you have many values you want to share and use between automations, you can use something like this
