for reasons we would like to use a 220V LED strip (without a transformer/power brick)...

mainly to avoid the need of a (mandatory) inspection "door" in the drywall ceiling.

I know the basic ones exist. but are there options where I can:

  • dim them
  • change color
  • change individual sections
  • control them using WLED

maybe something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004289452302.html

I believe if it has a controller without a transformer (just passing the 220v through), I won't need to have a inspection door as it seems to be required here (in Malta)

I suspect you might be going along with the letter of those regulations but not the spirit. That box you linked just ingratiates the power supply with the controller. I imagine the point of those regs is to differentiate standard LED (and other tech) lights which act as replacements for tungsten filament bulbs that put the AC conversion in the light fitting which is thus accessible, from more complex setups.
Are there no other options like mounting the AC to DC box ontop of a kitchen cupboard, assuming that’s the room these lights are intended for.
I really don’t like the look of that aliexpress part. I’d buy from more “known” brands and suppliers, but that’s just me. Am in UK here so and know very little about building regs, in the UK and elsewhere but am just trying to apply some logic and the benifit of some experience to your problem.

the simple answer here is...No

what you linked looks like it includes a transformer as part of the controller.
if LEDS were running on AC they would flicker at the mains frequency.
any kind of control system would also likely need to be running on DC.

not to mention the absolutely insane danger that would be running mains power across led strip...

my advice would be to stop trying to skirt around regulations and get a professional to do it correctly.
