#Is there environmental sensor with 1-2 km range

I would like to have temperature and humidity sensor outdoor 1-2 km away and battery powered. Is that possible with any existing reasonably priced consumer grade device (no DIY)?

  • RuuviTag with Ruuvi Gateway can't reach that in my tests. They can go around 500 m in my environment.
  • Would Z-Wave Long Range be the solution? It should be able to reach that distance but I'm not sure is it then required to have mains powered sensor instead of battery. I couldn't find any suitable devices really. Is it still too early?
  • LoraWan as technology should be able to do it. However, I haven't found any suitable devices quickly.

Which way I should go? What kind of devices I should be searching for?

What country are you in? Because that will definitely affect what LoRa devices are available to you

I've found the ones I use (Milesight) have spotty availability in other countries, but are fairly widely available here in New Zealand.

Gateway:
Smaller, semi-outdoors model: https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-gateway/ug65
Larger fully waterproof one: https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-gateway/ug67

The gateways talk MQTT directly so they're quite easy to set up using MQTT discovery to make "devices" in HA.

Sensors:
Boring standard T/H ones: https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/em300-th / https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/em320-th
Chungus industrial temperature-only unit: https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/em500-pt100
Compact temperature-only with cabled sensor(s): https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/ts201 / https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/ts30x

Fair warning, none of it is cheap. All of it is reasonably decent quality. Battery life is good. Open-air range (potentially with the need for a slightly bigger antenna on the gateway) should easily manage kilometres.

Thank you. Those gateways seem pricey. Would any of the cheaper gateways be just fine as well? There are number of options around 200 €.

This would be just for fun 🙂 The cost might a bit too much for the purpose.

I've not used the smaller models (UG56, UG63), I assume they work much the same

Never tried them, but SeedStudio offers some LoraWan devices that have some decent range.
