When I move from one part of the house to another, the companion app may stop working - it thinks it is disconnected. I can still access home assistant from a browser on the phone.
I do have WDS set up to extend range through the house. I don't know how to tell if that is the issue.

you likely have your network set up in such a way that its actually 2 networks with 1 inside the other. this means internet works fine from both but devices cannot necessarily talk to each other.
if so then this is likely a network configuration problem and not a home assistant problem... that said. can you explain which network devices you have and diagram how you have them connected together and its possible we can give you some pointers.
