All of my lights connected fine but the light switches it doesn't seem to want to work. with 1.2v batteries they don't show up and with 1.5 they show up but get stuck configuring.

Using ~1.2V NiMH batteries in devices expecting ~1.5V alkaline is always a bit of a 50-50 depending on whether they can handle the lower voltage
That's nothing IKEA or ZHA/HA are doing wrong, it's just the nature of using a lower nominal voltage power supply than the device requires - most of the time it works (because the device sees it as a nearly-empty 1.5V battery, not a full 1.2V battery) but during high power consumption activities like pairing, it falls over
Use 1.5V batteries to pair and then try again with 1.2V. If that doesn't work, just stick with 1.5V for the switches
