#Matter? Zigbee? “Universal” hub?

Hey all. I am new to HA. I bought a cheap refurb PC to host HAOS locally. I have been looking to upgrade/automate more things and have hit a snag.
Are all Matter hubs brand agnostic? Are all the Matter hubs attached to non-agnostic Zigbee hubs? Am I going to get stuck with one brand … or worse .. have to get several hubs if I decide to automate things that aren’t compatible?
Is there a “universal” hub that doesn’t care what brand the devices are?
I’ve been looking at the Sonoff hub on Amazon but can’t seem to pull the trigger on it. I don’t want to waste the money on it and have to buy another one in a few weeks/months.
Thanks for any assistance.

Maybe take a look at the SMLIGHT SLZB-06 adapter. Handles both, future proof and can be powered with PoE. Set it up with zigbee2mqtt in HAOS as this will provide more compatibility with devices out of the box compared to ZHA in HAOS

Widely compatible and reliable.

Totally agree with @shrewd oar 🙂

I use the same adapter for ZigBee with several "brands", like Ikea or anonimous Chinese devices. All works perfect. I haven't started using Thread, but will do in the next months when Ikea starts selling that kind of technology
