If you are not local to the instance, it would be better to subscribe before the trial expires.
That woud be the hope. trying to plan for contingencies
As of the August release, HA will try to reconnect to Nabu Casa in an hour and repeat that at intervals, and hopefully at some point it succeeds and recognizes the change from "no subscription" to "active subscription".
But that assumes there are no other issues.
So to avoid that gap, it is best to have the service continue without having a break between trial and active subscription.
Ultimately any connection issues should always be investigated on the HA side as a first step, because that connection cannot be recreated from support or outside.
