Hi guys, im planning to use Homeassistant on a Rasp Pi to be the main server for my Pickleball court business

System Flow
1)booking will be made in Rezerv Booking system
2)rezerv webhook send info to HA, then HA will trigger Igloohome smart lock door to generate Temporary door code to customer via phone number, whatsapp or email
3) HA will trigger smart lighting on booked time, 5 mins before starts and will off the lights automatically after booking time ends

is this possible? i might need help from admin or developers

Do Not Go Pi... treat yourself with a sff pc (e.g. Beelink)

#

To start with πŸ˜‰

#

For bussiness use i would run proxmoxVE on sff pc and run HA as a VM. That way you will get better, faster and safer options to run backups (wich are needed) and will provide a system that you can tweak more. In short: I think you would run into a nightmare of stability/hardware/configuration issues with raspi over time, so just want to prevent you for that (been there>done that>did not work)

look at "Why no SBC" and "Why Virtualize"

#

That said, you are in the wrong channel, posting in hardware would be better πŸ˜‰

#

maybe mod can transfer thread?

ornate swan
#

is this a good link for setting up HA as VM on proxmox?

#

now i have the idea of what to buy, a sff pc

I don't like the encrypted ZFS and caddy bloat. I usually link to https://www.derekseaman.com/2023/10/home-assistant-proxmox-ve-8-0-quick-start-guide-2.html
See here for example: https://gist.github.com/Impact123/c23c36eafe1672ec056233e450a86ae2
There I don't like the massive header and footer but oh well. I'm not a fan of helper scripts either. But yeah, both get the job done.
HAOS provides a OVA you can import: https://gist.github.com/Impact123/3dbd7e0ddaf47c5539708a9cbcaab9e3#importing-disk-images

i feel like this is completely advanced to my liking

#

cant i just use HA in mini pc? using windows 11

livid veldt
#

Sure but see my second link why I don't recommend that.

#

HAOS is a OS. If you want to run it on windows 11 (why?) you need to virtualize it.

ornate swan
#

HA as an application i mean

#

in windows 11

livid veldt
#

Kind of.

ornate swan
#

so the best for the business is what @woven nexus suggested?

livid veldt
#

On windows you can run it as docker container or as a VM. They suggested Proxmox VE, same as me, no?

ornate swan
#

yes same as what suggested,

but the problem is, im not a tech savy person as the setup is abit complicated

livid veldt
#

I don't think HA isn't really something for the non tech savvy yet.

ornate swan
#

i prefer something straight forward and simple, so i can learn more about proxmox VE in the near future, and once im ready, ill just do a backup and transfer

livid veldt
#

You could technically buy a HA green and be ready to go but sooner or later you will have (and probably want) to wrangle with the CLI or other advanced topics. I can almost guarantee it. A proper PC just gives you the most flexibility if you've read the SBC article.

ornate swan
#

yeap, i understand, proper PC just give that extra room for improvement, reliable other than SBC

#

ill take a look on how to virtualize the system

livid veldt
#

So let's say you get the PC. Your choice is either to install HAOS directly or virtualize it. Just HAOS on t will be a waste but might be the simplest way with the option to later virtualize.

For remote access I'd recommend tailscale. I'm the worst HA ambassador as I shit on all the options πŸ˜„

woven nexus
#

just install proxmoxVE on a sff (e.g. Beelink or second hand Dell,HP with min 8gb ram, more=better, costs around €160)

#

Post install removes subscription nag etc.

woven nexus
ornate swan
woven nexus
#

yep

#

imo

#

futureproof at least since you can do several things over time with proxmox. proxmox doesnt need much resources so running haos bare metal would be a waste of hardware/performance/compatibility for future bussiness plans.

#

but again, using the above is 3 things only. 1 install proxmox, 2 use command for post install, 3 use command for installing HAOS VM. Ready.

Access what. PVE or HAOS?

I'd recommend tailscale. No need to make your HA publicly accessible in most cases and it works behind CGNAT too.

goodmorning/day format&impact

#

have to take a look at tailscale, never used it.

i paid around €70,- for a year, no issues at all, money spent well.

#

and supporting home assistant (ofcourse πŸ˜‰ )

#

for tailscale dont know

#

i guess it's nabu casa for 70 with online backup, better voice support (because we're in the voice-assistants channel) and no setup required, against e.g. tailscale wich i think is free (upper right corner says GET STARTED, IT'S FREE)

livid veldt
#

No port forwarding needed and there's an addon for tailscale.

woven nexus
#

back to beginning of chat, you're talking about setting things up for your bussiness, hardware is clear now, as is software clear (HAOS as VM on Proxmox. Now be wise and go for no hassle setup with nabu.

woven nexus
#

but still, for bussiness use i would choose the safe thing with online encrypted backups, as this is mandatory in several countries for running a bussiness.

Tailscale is good. I use Wireguard for VPN.
Still have my HA exposed through CloudFlare tunnel, because don't like to be always on VPN. And still pay for NabuCasa, because I want to support development. It gives me peace of mind, I guess. πŸ™‚

woven nexus
#

took a dive into tailscale docs and video, indeed it seems flawless if you are doing a new setup and no external access configured yet. promising

royal bear
#

I used ZeroTierOne before, it's similar to Tailscale and also free. Tailscale seems to be "mainstream" thingy now, but it's not single solution. πŸ™‚

#

I just don't like to be on VPN constantly. I have other good VPN to be on (PIA).

woven nexus
#

love nabu for the better voice experience

#

have to setup an haos instance today for a friend, will try tailscale at once

woven nexus
#

tailscale installed and running, accessible from https. Took a while complaining about dns (what else)

#

for me i'll keep my nabu
